. 1. New Zealand is an island that lies off the eastern coast of Australia. 新西蘭是澳大利亞東海岸外邊的一個(gè)島嶼。
off 意為 “在離……的海上(in a part of the ocean that is near the land)”.
e.g. They live on the island off the coast of Fujian. 他們住福建沿海的一個(gè)島嶼上。
They were sailing two miles off shore. 他們在離岸兩英里的海上航
off 還可以解釋“靠近……(near a particular street, road, etc, but not directly on it)”.
e.g. The restaurant is just off the main road. 這家飯店就在主干道旁邊。
2. It is made up of two large islands: North Island and South Island. 它(新西蘭) 由兩個(gè)大島組成:北島和南島。
be made up of 由……組成 (consist of).
e.g. Our class is made up of 32 boys and 20 girls. = Thirty-two boys and twenty girls make up our class.
我們班由三十二個(gè)男生和二十個(gè)女生組成。
注意類似詞語的意思:be made of 由……制造的(在產(chǎn)品中可以看出原材料)。
e.g. The bridge is made of steel. 這座橋是用鋼材造的。
be made from 由……制造的(在產(chǎn)品中看不出原材料)。
e.g. Paper is made from wood. 紙張是用木料制成的。
make up還可作“彌補(bǔ)；編造；整理；化妝”講。例如：
This story was made up by Tom. 這個(gè)故事是湯姆虛構(gòu)的。
She always makes up before leaving. 在走之前，她總是化一下妝。
We must make it up to him somehow.
我們得想個(gè)辦法賠償他。
3. New Zealand is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the north and east, and the Tasman Sea to the south and west. 新西蘭北面和東面被太平洋包圍, 南面和西面則是塔斯曼海。
surround…with …用……把……圍住,常用于被動(dòng)語態(tài)be surrounded by/ with, 意思是 “(四周)被……包圍,圍住”。要表達(dá)“在某一面被包圍, 圍住”,短語后面接介詞to, by 或on。
e.g. The village is surrounded by mountains on its sides. 這個(gè)村子三面環(huán)山。
4. …many of New Zealand’s cities lie on a bay and have a natural, deep harbour. 新西蘭許多城市都建在海灣上, 擁有天然的深水港。
這里的介詞on表示“在……(水) 旁，靠近……(水);沿著(水邊) (at the side of a river or area of water) ”。
e.g. Her mother comes from a small village on the Baltic Sea. 她母親出身在靠近波羅的海的一個(gè)小村子里。

注意比較:on the coast 與off the coast.兩者的意思都是“靠近岸邊”,但前者表示在岸上;后者表示“在海上”。
5. It is some 3,500 kilometres from Polynesia to New Zealand, which they travelled in narrow boats. 從波利尼西亞到新西蘭約有3,500公里, 他們乘著狹長的小船前來。
1) 此處“it”與“which”均指代距離；
2) some在句中是副詞,通常用于數(shù)字前, 解釋“大約(about)”。
e.g. That was some twenty years ago. 那是在大約20年前的事。
3) Polynesia (波利尼西亞) 是位于大洋洲東部的中太平洋群島,主要包括法屬波利尼西亞、夏威夷、湯加等
6.It is about the same size as Japan. 新西蘭大約和日本一樣大。
the same…as…意為“與……一樣/相同”。as后可接名詞、代詞、副詞及從句。如：
Your pen is the same as mine.
according to the same rules as before. 根據(jù)以前的規(guī)則
注意：“the same +名詞”后可接由as或that引導(dǎo)的定語從句。但是that強(qiáng)調(diào)的是同一件事情。例如：
This is the same book as I lost the other day.
這本書和我前幾天去的那本一模一樣。
This is the same book that I lost the other day.
這正是我前幾天丟的那本書。
